Lyemance Dampers – Operating Instructions

Operating Damper

Open the damper before starting a fire.
Pull the handle down slightly and release, allowing the top of the handle chain to pull up and hang freely about 4" above the bracket (see illustration). If top of chain only hangs 1" to 2" above bracket, damper may not be open.

Warning: Do not start a fire if damper is not clearly open. Failure to follow this rule may cause smoke damage.

Close the damper after the fire is completely out.
Pull the handle down until the lug is below bracket. Move cable into either notch in bracket and release handle.

Energy-saving note: Closing the damper when fireplace is not in use will prevent heated or air-conditioned air from escaping out the chimney.

If damper does not open…
This may occur due to heavy snow, ice, or improper installation.

Pull the handle down with extra force. You will notice the handle comes down 1" to 2" farther than usual with this force. This action causes the Lyemance Power Lever to push the damper door away from the damper frame and break any ice bonds.

If the Power Lever action does not open the damper, then inspect the damper on your roof to determine how to get it open, or call your local chimney professional to do the inspection.

Fire prevention warning: remember to have your flue checked annually for creosote buildup by your local chimney professional.

Gas appliance warning: should the fireplace be converted to use by a gas appliance, such as gas logs, this damper should be removed.

Chimney Terms

Stainless Steel Chimney Liner

Stainless steel pipe, either rigid or flexible, made for relining flues of masonry chimneys when the original clay liner has cracked or broken. May also be used to create a lining in a masonry chimney that was made without a clay liner.

Chimney Caps

Protective coverings for chimneys usually made of aluminum, galvanized or stainless steel, or copper. Most chimney caps have a mesh screening that serves the dual purpose of spark arrestor and barrier against animals. Chimney caps also prevent rain from entering the flue of the chimney.

Top-Sealing Dampers

A device installed at the top of a chimney for the purpose of sealing the flue shut when the fireplace is not in use. They are often used as replacements for throat dampers that are installed just above the firebox when a masonry chimney is built. Lyemance and Lock-Top top-sealing dampers are as much as 90% more efficient than throat dampers because they provide a silicone rubber gasket seal rather than metal to metal.
